I’m married to the most wonderful man—a man who not only knows how to make me laugh but also understands that a little playful energy is what keeps life exciting. We’ve always embraced those lighthearted moments that make the everyday feel extraordinary, and it’s something I love most about us.
This morning, I decided to add a bit of harmless fun to my grocery run. As I stood in the produce aisle, staring down a pile of avocados that all seemed equally indecipherable, I had a sudden idea. Why not turn this mundane task into a tiny adventure?
A man browsing nearby caught my eye—mid-40s, kind-looking, with a relaxed air about him. I smiled and walked over, pretending to look a little helpless. “Excuse me,” I said with a hint of humor in my voice, “I feel like there’s a science to picking the perfect avocado, and I’m failing. Any chance you could teach me the art of avocado selection?”
His face lit up immediately, clearly flattered by the request. “You’re right—it’s a bit of an art,” he said, already reaching for an avocado. What followed was an unexpectedly earnest mini-lesson. He explained how to gently press near the stem to test ripeness and even shared a tip about checking the color under the little cap to ensure it’s not too green or brown.
We both laughed when he handed me the “winner,” and I thanked him, genuinely amused by how much fun I’d just had over something so small.
Driving home, I couldn’t wait to tell my husband. When I shared the story, he grinned and said, “That poor guy probably thinks he made your day!” He wasn’t wrong, though—for all the fun I had, the best part was coming home to a man who gets why those little sparks make life brighter.
