The autopsy for Stefanie Smith, the mother of two who suddenly died on a flight home to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic, has reportedly been completed.

According to her brother, Chris Volz, Smith died of natural causes.

On February 28, Smith, 41, suddenly fell ill while onboard an American Airlines flight heading to Charlotte, North Carolina from the Dominican Republic. She, along with her boyfriend and another couple had just spent five days at a resort on the Caribbean island.

Volz told ABC News, he learned his sister suddenly began convulsing in her seat. Medical personnel who were on the flight rushed to perform CPR, and the plane diverted to Turks and Caicos.

Smith was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

“At 6:12 pm, the Police Control Room received a call from the Air Traffic Control Tower requesting medical assistance for a 41-year-old female, who at the time was receiving Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),” the Turks and Caicos police said in a statement.

After an agonizing two-week wait, Volz said his family finally received the autopsy results confirming Smith died from a carotid artery dissection in her neck.

“It was truly a tragic medical event that happened,” he said, adding that the autopsy did not suggest foul play.

Smith leaves behind an 18-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter. According to Volz, her body is expected to return to the United States sometime next week.
