The Setup
My brother’s latest setup landed me on a disastrous date with his friend Stewart, leaving us stuck at a swanky restaurant with an unpaid bill. As tensions escalated and the manager threatened to call the police, I wondered how we’d escape.
“Jess, you gotta meet this guy,” Adam said, grinning. “Stewart. Works with me. Real stand-up guy. Stable job, nice car, the works.” Despite my doubts, I agreed. “Fine. But if he turns out to be another dud, I’m never listening to you again.”
The Date
Stewart picked me up in a shiny sedan. The restaurant was like something out of a movie. “Order whatever you like,” Stewart said, waving off my hesitation about the expensive menu. Our conversation flowed effortlessly, and I found myself laughing more than I had in weeks.
The Bill
The evening was perfect until the bill arrived. Stewart’s card was declined multiple times. “This is ridiculous,” he snapped at the waitress. Other diners began to glance our way. “Stewart, maybe there’s a problem with the card. Do you have another one?” I suggested.
The Fallout
Desperate, Stewart asked if I had cash. “I told you I can’t afford this place. I don’t have this kind of money!” The manager intervened, and we stepped outside to avoid further disruption. I called Adam, seething. “Get down here and fix this mess. Now.”
Adam arrived, smugly settled the bill, and dismissed the incident as a prank. “Lighten up, Jess. It was just a prank.” Stewart apologized, but the night left me feeling humiliated and betrayed. As we parted ways, I knew it was time to reassess my trust in my brother and set some boundaries.
