She started performing when she was still very young and during a performance in Denver she met the person who would influence her life and career a great deal, actress Julie Harris. It was Harris who persuaded Joan to attend the well-respected Yale Drama School. She even helped her get a scholarship, making Joan the second woman to enroll into the school at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe [Harris] wrote to the dean and asked him to meet me. She appeared on television series including\u00a0<em>Temperature\u2019s Rising<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Spider-Woman<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Days of Our Lives<\/em>\u00a0and even in one episode of\u00a0<em>Bonanza<\/em>. Then, in 1978, she made several appearances as Valene Ewing on\u00a0<em>Dallas<\/em>, which later turned into the most significant role she has ever played. As\u00a0<em>Dallas\u00a0<\/em>became a huge hit, the network decided to film its spin-off\u00a0<em>Knots Landing\u00a0<\/em>in which Joan reprised her role of Valene Ewing. In fact,\u00a0<em>Knots Landing\u00a0<\/em>was written before\u00a0<em>Dallas,\u00a0<\/em>but as producers needed to decided which show to work on they chose\u00a0<em>Dallas\u00a0<\/em>because they wanted a \u201cbig rich family\u201d show.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Joan was a leading character for 13 seasons in\u00a0<em>Knots Landing\u00a0<\/em>and it was her husband who persuaded her to accept the role. I couldn\u2019t believe they had picked her to be my mother. Joan was aware she was the one to be blamed for the cancellation, but she though she needed to try on new challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have loved more than life the 13 years I\u2019ve had on that show,\u201d she said. \u201c[<em>Knots Landing<\/em>\u00a0creator] David Jacobs is a great influence on my life, has taught me so much about so many things. Ted [Shackelford] is the other half of every breath I take on the show, and personally, he\u2019s a large part of my heart. The people are my family\u2013we have shared marriages, deaths, divorces.
