But there\u2019s something that has become a recurring shadow in our relationship\u2014his tendency to bring up my past, to compare himself to men I knew long before we even met. But his retroactive jealousy\u2014the lingering doubts about things I can\u2019t change\u2014sometimes makes it hard to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll be having a perfectly good evening, watching a movie or sharing a quiet dinner, when he suddenly asks a question about one of them\u2014someone I haven\u2019t thought about in years. \u201cWas he funnier than me? Did he make you feel more alive?\u201d he\u2019ll ask, and I can see the tension in his eyes, the way he\u2019s bracing himself for an answer he doesn\u2019t want to hear. I\u2019ve learned to respond gently, reminding him that he\u2019s the one I love now, but it never seems to fully calm the storm inside him.<\/p>\n<p>It feels like he\u2019s competing with ghosts\u2014men who are nothing more than distant memories to me, yet they seem so real and present in his mind. Sometimes, I wish he could see himself the way I do\u2014a man who is kind, intelligent, and loving, and who has nothing to prove. I want him to feel secure in the love we share, but it\u2019s hard when he\u2019s constantly comparing himself to a past that can\u2019t be undone.
