Her look was quintessentially 1980s, and her gaze instantly captivated me. At first, I thought it might be\u00a0Heather Locklear, but I quickly realized it wasn\u2019t her. Instead, I soon learned her name: Rebecca De Mornay.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-odd-upbringing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Odd upbringing<\/h3>\n<p>Rebecca De Mornay was born in 1959 in Santa Rosa, California. Her upbringing has often been described as unconventional \u2014 some might even say chaotic.<\/p>\n<p>Her parents were Wally George, a disc jockey who later became a right-wing TV personality, and Julie George, who dreamed of becoming an actress.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9841999341823196\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_2_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>When Rebecca was just two years old, her parents divorced. They traveled around in a Volkswagen van, eventually settling in a small town in Austria, where Rebecca began school. Living like a nomad forced Rebecca to grow up quickly, and she was often seen as much older than her years.<\/p>\n<p>She was courageous and mature, making her own decisions early on. By the age of 18, she returned to the U.S. to pursue a career. Initially, Rebecca had a passion for singing and aspired to make it as a folk singer or composer.<\/p>\n<p>Acting came to her mind later on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI started thinking about acting one day when I was walking down Santa Monica Boulevard her in Las Vegas,\u201d she said in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe only thing I could relate to was that my mother had wanted to be an actress when she was very young. She hadn\u2019t really done anything: she had just been a mother. She had told me as an early teenager: \u2019I think you could be very gifted as an actress\u2019. Which sort of poisoned it for me, because anything your mother says, you don\u2019t want to do\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-breakthrough\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breakthrough<\/h3>\n<p>In 1980, De Mornay moved to Los Angeles and enrolled at the famous Lee Strasberg Institute to study acting.<\/p>\n<p>De Mornay made her film debut with a small role in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1981 film\u00a0<em>One from the Heart<\/em>, but it was her breakthrough role in\u00a0<em>Risky Business<\/em> just two years later that truly put her on the map.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1983 blockbuster, Rebecca plays the role of a seductive call girl (Lana) who teaches a young Tom Cruise a few life lessons. With her blonde bangs, porcelain-doll features, and piercing blue eyes, she was the perfect fit for the role. She had a mystique in the movie and was something of a mystery woman.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-153916 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/08\/19080512\/GettyImages-105918194.jpg?resize=704%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"704\" height=\"1024\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/08\/19080512\/GettyImages-105918194.jpg\" data-eio-rwidth=\"704\" data-eio-rheight=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ron Galella\/Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While most remember the 1983 comedy as Cruise\u2019s launchpad to superstardom, it also propelled the once-unknown 24-year-old De Mornay into a solid career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI had only been auditioning for six months \u2013 which is nothing \u2013 when I got the female lead in a feature film that went on to become a monster hit,\u201d De Mornay told The Los Angeles Times in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI got a nine-year ride on one film\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Although there was pressure to cast a famous actress, director Paul Brickman was determined to have De Mornay. She maintained some source of integrity and soul,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-intense-affair-with-tom-cruise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intense affair with Tom Cruise<\/h3>\n<p>De Mornay knew right away that\u00a0<em>Risky Business<\/em>\u00a0was destined to be a hit, but she had no idea it would also spark a new romance. During the shoot, she and Tom Cruise not only connected professionally but also fell for each other. Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, and the sparks continued to fly off-camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that\u00a0Tom engaged in an intense affair\u00a0during the shooting with De Mornay,\u201d Curtis Armstrong,\u00a0who costarred in\u00a0<em>Risky Business<\/em>\u00a0alongside Tom and Rebecca, recalled in his 2017 memoir.<\/p>\n<p>De Mornay was dating actor Harry Dean Stanton at the time, whom she had met in the early 1980s while working on\u00a0<em>One from the Heart<\/em>. Their romance, though, quickly fizzled once she and Cruise began to fall for each other.<\/p>\n<p>De Mornay initially joked that she found Cruise \u201dannoying\u201d when they first met, but he quickly won her over. She was one of the hottest names in Hollywood and deeply in love. De Mornay continued to work throughout the 1980s, achieving varying levels of success. In retrospect, I had a good education in Hollywood ups and downs very quickly. I was in a big hit and then several lows. This issue has affected not just De Mornay but many of her peers in the industry. De Mornay\u2019s friend, Carol Kane, once told her that \u201cwhen I turned 40 it was like I sent an invisible telegram to Hollywood that said, \u2018Don\u2019t hire me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A significant part of the problem is the scarcity of substantial roles for women as they age, which has undoubtedly impacted De Mornay\u2019s career as well. At the same time, she remains one of the fortunate few who have been able to sustain a career in acting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always been important to me to choose roles where there [is] some model of strength to women, regardless of what they do or how they do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-rebecca-de-mornay-daughters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rebecca De Mornay daughters<\/h3>\n<p>As of today, Rebecca De Mornay continues to work in the entertainment industry, though her roles have become more selective over the years.<\/p>\n<p>She has transitioned from the leading roles of her earlier career to supporting roles in both film and television. You are strong enough to fight back at these guys. If an 18-year-old girl can lead an army, you can fucking fight off an aggressor.
