This is the daily reality of school teachers, who have to somehow remain in control of a classroom of up to thirty or more kids every day of their working lives.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-901\" data-method=\"placement-service\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span>Child discipline is one of the greatest challenges schools face, and over the years there have been different strategies used to keep students in line. For many years, the use of physical punishment, such as hitting or whipping students, was common in schoolhouses across America, but in the last few decades has been replaced by punishments that are less violent.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-115\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23202726502,105716491\/secretlifeofmom_com-box-3_0__container__\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-secretlifeofmom_com-box-3-0_charity\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Not too long ago, however, a few schools in Texas have reintroduced the antiquated method.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-909\" data-method=\"placement-service\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-schools-in-texas-reintroduce-paddling-students-as-a-form-of-corporal-punishment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools in Texas Reintroduce Paddling Students as a form of Corporal Punishment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Three schools in Texas\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/texas-school-three-rivers-corporal-punishment-paddling-a7854881.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reintroduced corporal punishment<\/a> to discipline children. Under the new policy, staff in the Three Rivers School District are able to use a wooden paddle to beat disobedient students, administering one paddling for each misdemeanor. Parents are asked at the time of enrollment whether or not they consent to have the punishment used on their child.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ezoic-ad ezoic-at-0 medrectangle-3 medrectangle-3118 adtester-container adtester-container-118\" data-ez-name=\"secretlifeofmom_com-medrectangle-3\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><span id=\"div-gpt-ad-secretlifeofmom_com-medrectangle-3-0\" class=\"ezoic-ad\" data-google-query-id=\"CMvZ_cm_wIsDFTPzEQgdlW44bw\"><\/span><span class=\"reportline\" data-nosnippet=\"\" data-ez-ph-owner-id=\"118\"><span class=\"ezoicwhat\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"ezoic\" src=\"https:\/\/go.ezodn.com\/utilcave_com\/ezoicbwa.png\" alt=\"Ezoic\" name=\"?pageview_id=de4c8f00-c700-43bc-7174-ea3031be5b2a&amp;ad_position_id=118&amp;impression_group_id=secretlifeofmom_com-medrectangle-3\/2025-02-13\/2251505730419269&amp;ad_size=728x90&amp;domain_id=237790&amp;url=https:\/\/secretlifeofmom.com\/schools-voted-to-bring-back-paddling\/?lsid=5wqmta1mdc1\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><p><em>\u201cIf the parent is not comfortable with it, that\u2019s the end of the discussion\u201d<\/em>, said Three Rivers Independent Schools District Superintendent Mary Springs [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/texas-school-three-rivers-corporal-punishment-paddling-a7854881.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Andrew Amara, the school\u2019s campus behavior coordinator, was paddled when he was a student, a punishment he says worked on him. He hopes that this change will be a more effective punishment than detention for children between the ages of four and twelve.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-910\" data-method=\"placement-service\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23202726502,105716491\/secretlifeofmom_com-medrectangle-4_0__container__\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-secretlifeofmom_com-medrectangle-4-0_charity\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23202726502,105716491\/secretlifeofmom_com-medrectangle-4_1__container__\"><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><p><em>\u201cIt was an immediate response for me,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.\u00a0<em>\u201cI knew that if I got in trouble with a teacher and I was disrespectful, whatever the infraction was, I knew I was going to get a swat by the principal.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0[1]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This policy, which was agreed upon unanimously by the board of trustees, only allows behavior coordinators and the principal to use the paddle on students. At the time it was approved, the staff was going to be tracking the number of child discipline referrals that were made and compare that to the numbers from the previous year. If the number went down, they will have considered the policy to be a success [1].<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-119\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is paddling students or other forms of Corporal Punishment Effective in Schools?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the National Association of School Psychologists, corporal punishment is defined as \u201cthe intentional infliction of pain or discomfort and\/or the use of physical force upon a student with the intention of causing the student to experience bodily pain so as to correct or punish the student\u2019s behavior\u201d [1].<\/p>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23202726502,105716491\/secretlifeofmom_com-box-4_1__container__\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-secretlifeofmom_com-box-4-0_1_charity\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But is this form of punishment effective? The science says no- and it can cause damage in children beyond physical discomfort.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-120\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3447048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a>\u00a0has determined that children who were subjected to \u201cnormal\u201d amounts of physical punishment when they were young often demonstrated higher levels of aggressive behavior when they got older. These children also showed higher rates of delinquency and spousal assault later in life [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3447048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This is because corporal punishment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellfamily.com\/facts-about-corporal-punishment-1094806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">models aggressive behavior<\/a>, which teaches children to solve problems with violence. This can lead to bullying and other behaviors that rely on having power over someone else [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellfamily.com\/facts-about-corporal-punishment-1094806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-912\" data-method=\"placement-service\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23202726502,105716491\/secretlifeofmom_com-banner-1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ezoic-ad ezoic-at-0 banner-1 banner-1912 adtester-container adtester-container-912\" data-ez-name=\"secretlifeofmom_com-banner-1\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><span class=\"reportline\" data-nosnippet=\"\" data-ez-ph-owner-id=\"912\"><span class=\"ezoicwhat\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/130\/2\/184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0in the journal\u00a0<em>Pediatrics\u00a0<\/em>reported that harsh physical punishment such as spanking, pushing, grabbing, and paddling was associated with an increased instance of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders.<\/span><\/span><\/span>This holds true regardless of whether or not the kind of punishment was considered child abuse- it still placed children at a higher risk for mental illness [<a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/130\/2\/184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<\/a>].<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-122\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-not-a-long-term-solution\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not a Long Term Solution<\/h3>\n<p>Sandra Graham-Bermann, Ph.D., a psychology professor and principal investigator for the Child Violence and Trauma Laboratory at the University of Michigan, says that while corporal punishment may appear to stop problematic behavior initially, it\u00a0only makes things worse\u00a0in the long run [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/entry\/adrian-peterson-corporal-punishment-science_n_5831962#:~:text=Physical%20punishment%20doesn%27t%20actually,because%20the%20child%20is%20afraid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-913\" data-method=\"placement-service\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span>A 2009\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2896871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0concluded that young adults who are exposed to\u00a0harsh\u00a0corporal punishment (HCP) have a negative effect on their brain development, and actually decreases the amount of grey matter in the prefrontal cortex of their brains. There is a significant correlation between grey matter in this area and a child\u2019s performance on an IQ test [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2896871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6<\/a>].<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-123\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/07\/23\/health\/effects-spanking-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grey matter is the key<\/a>\u00a0to your brain\u2019s ability to learning self-control, and the more grey matter you have, the better you are at evaluating rewards and consequences. The more children are hit as a form of punishment, the less self-control they have [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/07\/23\/health\/effects-spanking-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Gershoff, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, is the leading researcher on spanking in the United States. In her fifteen years of work, she has never found a positive\u00a0consequence of spanking.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-914\" data-method=\"placement-service\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><p><em>\u201cMost of us will stop what we\u2019re doing if somebody hits us,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>she said.\u00a0<em>\u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019ve learned why somebody hit us, or what we should be doing instead, which is the real motive behind discipline.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0[7]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/secretlifeofmom.com\/2-year-olds-just-learning-how-to-be-human\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2-year-olds aren\u2019t terrible\u2014they\u2019re just learning how to be human<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-124\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\" data-ezoic-video-excluded=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Corporal Punishment Still Used in the United States<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite the large body of evidence that disproves that efficacy of corporal punishment, it is still used in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/10\/161005090700.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nineteen states across the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent data available on the subject is from 2016, which found that more than 160 thousand children were disciplined using corporal punishment in public schools in the 2013-2014 school year.
