Find out more!<\/p>\n<p>Kathleen Turner was born on June 19, 1954, in Springfield, Missouri, to strict Christian parents who discouraged her interest in acting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was of missionary stock, so theatre and acting were simply one step up from being a streetwalker,\u201d Turner explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-21\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25304 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/recipmo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/3-26-min.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"448\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"2381187395\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Because her father worked for the United States Foreign Service, they lived in Venezuela, Cuba, and Canada. Kathleen left her parents to pursue a career as a stage performer at a London high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were seven of us who were the theatre mafia,\u201d Turner recalled her childhood. \u201cWe produced, directed, performed, selected plays, fired one teacher, and hired another.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-22\"><\/div>\n<p>Kathleen and her family relocated to Springfield, Missouri, after her father died when she was 17.<\/p>\n<p>After volunteering at a local Planned Parenthood, she became a lifelong advocate for women\u2019s rights and healthcare. She volunteers with City Meals On Wheels in New York City, Child Help USA, and Planned Parenthood\u2019s Board of Advocates.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-23\"><\/div>\n<p>Herbert Blau discovered Turner at Southwest Missouri State University. He encouraged her to attend the University of Maryland, where she earned a BFA.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25305\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/recipmo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/4-10-1024x892-min.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"745\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"3473704378\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Turner rose to prominence after her debut in The Doctors with a stunning performance in the 1981 thriller Body Heat.<\/p>\n<p>Following the success of Body Heat, Turner starred in The Man with Two Brains and Romancing the Stone. Douglas, DeVito, and Turner were reunited in War of the Roses and Jewel of the Nile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2042390583881313\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"filled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_3_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>Turner won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her roles in Romancing the Stone (1984) and Prizzi\u2019s Honor (1985).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the strangest comedy in many a month, a movie so dark, so cynical, and so funny that probably only Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner could have kept straight faces during the love scenes,\u201d Prizzi\u2019s Honor critic Robert Ebert wrote in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Turner is a seductive mob assassin who works with Charley Partanna, Jack Nicholson\u2019s New York City hitman.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25306\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/recipmo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/5-4-1024x785-min.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"655\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"1850822327\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPrizzi\u2019s Honor reinforced the image of me as a manipulative woman, but I must admit that there are moments in Prizzi when my character is just this newlywed\u2014got her job, but she\u2019s preparing casseroles\u2014that I like,\u201d Turner told David Sheff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband and friends say it\u2019s out there,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not interested in learning much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turner starred in the following year\u2019s Peggy Sue Got Married as Peggy Sue, a time traveler who revisits her 60s school days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an extremely unfriendly climate towards women,\u201d Turner said in 2018. \u201cThe contempt, the sensation of being a prop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turner has had a successful theatrical career since the mid-1980s, but she may never receive another award.<\/p>\n<p>Turner\u2019s Tony Award for her role as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1990 was her second major theatrical performance. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof earned her the Outstanding Broadway Debut award from Theatre World. Indiscretions, The Graduate, and Tallulah followed Turner.<\/p>\n<p>For three years, she played Martha in Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? This role earned the actor another Tony nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Turner despised the 1966 film adaptation, which starred Elizabeth Taylor as Martha. She said of the Hollywood legend in a 2018 Vulture interview, \u201cFor a while I felt like half my existence was doing her wrongs right\u2026 Take note of her tone of voice. It\u2019s dreadful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t particularly skilled,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, for God\u2019s sake, I was blessed to perform the play and demonstrate the comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25307\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/recipmo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6-3-1024x791-min.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"660\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"3293756364\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Turner followed her stage success with roles in Undercover Blues, The Virgin Suicides, and Beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Who framed who? Jessica Rabbit in Roger Rabbit (1988) had a gravelly voice. She portrayed Chandler Bing\u2019s drag queen father, Charles Bing, in Friends.<\/p>\n<p>Turner admitted to Vulture that she struggled to fit in with Friends\u2019 cliquish cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be honest, as I always am: I didn\u2019t feel particularly welcomed by the cast,\u201d Turner said of the show. \u201cI recall wearing this difficult sequined gown\u2014and my high heels were simply hurting me. It struck me as odd that none of the actors offered me a seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt some point, one of the older crew members said, \u2018Get Miss Turner a chair,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cThe Friends actors were such a clique\u2014but my experience with them was not unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kathleen Turner experienced \u201cinexplicable pains and fevers\u201d due to rheumatoid arthritis in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>By 1994, she needed assistance getting out of bed. Turner used biotech medicine and gymnastics to treat her rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year before I was diagnosed was terrifying,\u201d she said of her rheumatoid arthritis education campaign in 2002. \u201cI didn\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know why I was in so much pain and feeling so ill,\u201d she explained. \u201cI\u2019m interested in this campaign because I want people to know they can get information, manage this disease, and fight for their lives and lifestyles. There is assistance available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turner\u2019s condition was frequently upsetting, particularly in the news, but she didn\u2019t let it stop her.<\/p>\n<p>She said in 2018 that she ignored the doctor who told her she\u2019d be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 1992. \u201cI can\u2019t overstate the struggle against the never-ending pain and horror of who I\u2019d become.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to conceal my disease for years,\u201d she explained. It was humiliating to be called a drunk and chastised for my appearance. Despite his alcoholism, Robert Downey Jr. was hired by the studios. If I said I had an uncontrolled disease, no one would approach me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Kathleen Turner divorced real estate entrepreneur Jay Weiss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t bother me that nearly four decades after [Body Heat], I\u2019m still referred to as a sexual icon,\u201d the Jessica Rabbit star, 66, says.
