Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded the film four stars, calling it \u201cthe year\u2019s best film\u201d thus referring to Goldberg\u2019s role as \u201cone of the most amazing debut performances in movie history.\u201d Eventually, she became the first Black woman to win all four major North American entertainment awards, Emmy,\u00a0Grammy,\u00a0Oscar, and\u00a0Tony.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\" data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/woo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57641\" src=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/woo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1707\" height=\"2560\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock\/Ron Adar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Living in a housing project in Manhattan with her mother as a young child, Goldberg knew that comedy was her calling in life. She dropped school and married at the age of around 18 to Alvin Martin, the first of Whoopi\u2019s three husbands, and that many failed marriages. From this union, which didn\u2019t last long, the actress got her daughter Alexandra.<\/p>\n<p>Once she divorced, Goldberg and Alexandra moved places and lived in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\" data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/whoopigoldberg3-scaled-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57642\" src=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/whoopigoldberg3-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1370\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock\/Featureflash Photo Agency<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her dream of becoming comedian was always there, but she was forced to do other jobs in order to provide for her daughter.<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking to Oprah, Goldberg revealed she once worked as a mortuary beautician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did hair and makeup on dead people,\u201d Goldberg said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an ad in the paper! And I\u2019m a licensed beautician as well, because I went to beauty school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a rough gig,\u201d she added. \u201cYou have to be a certain kind of person. And you have to love people in order to make them worthy of a great send-off.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\" data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/whoopigoldberg2-scaled-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57643\" src=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/whoopigoldberg2-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1370\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Youtube\/gauravsrivastava<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>At the same time, she did comedy and toured across the US and Europe with her one-woman production,\u00a0<em>The Spook Show<\/em>. It was then that she was discovered by legendary director Mike Nichols. None of the marriages lasted long, and the actress believes she is the one to be blamed for that.<\/p>\n<p>Goldberg shared that she has a hard time sharing things with others, which was the case with her ex-husbands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, people expect you to have a boyfriend. They expect you to get married,\u201d she told the\u00a0<em>New York Times.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I kept trying to do that, but I didn\u2019t want to share information with somebody else. I didn\u2019t want anybody asking me why I was doing what I was doing or to have to make the other person feel better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She then added: \u201cBut if you\u2019re in a relationship, you have to do those things, and it took me a while to figure out that I didn\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/26_06022021_34168.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58959\" src=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/26_06022021_34168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">Quizzed by Piers Morgan on her former marriages, Goldberg admitted that she had never truly loved her husbands. She told Morgan, \u201cI suppose that, you know, you have to actually be in love with the person that you marry. You have to really be committed to them. And I\u2019m just \u2013 I don\u2019t have that commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She then continued, \u201cAnd it seemed to me that if I was married, I\u2019d have a\u2026 more normal life. But clearly, that\u2019s not the case. There\u2019s not a good reason to get married. You have to actually want a life with someone through ups and downs. And I \u2013 I just discovered that wasn\u2019t for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a class=\"td-modal-image\" href=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/gold.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58957\" src=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/gold.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">The actress never spoke much of her private life. It was the same when she dated former Bond star Timothy Dalton. The two were considered a high-profile couple and dated for about a year. He even accompanied her to the 1991 Oscars when she took home the Best Supporting Actress award that night for her memorable turn as loony psychic Oda Mae Brown in\u00a0<em>Ghost<\/em>. She, however, didn\u2019t mention Dalton in her acceptance speech.<\/p>\n<p>Goldberg also dates fellow co-star Ted Danson with whom she played alongside in the comedy\u00a0<em>Made in America\u00a0<\/em>(1993).<\/p>\n<p>At the time they got involved in a relationship, Goldberg was single, but Danson was married. Once the word of their affair spread around, his then-wife Cassandra Coates kicked him to the curb and divorced him for a hefty $30 million.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\" data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58958\" src=\"https:\/\/boreddaddy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Screenshot-2023-01-10-014842.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"812\" height=\"451\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mv-ad-box\" data-slotid=\"content_9_btf\"><\/div>\n<p>Following his divorce, he and Goldberg remained together for some time and were friends for the next 18 months before they stopped being in touch.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing their break-up, she confessed to\u00a0<em>Closer\u00a0<\/em>magazine, \u201cIt was really painful, and it was very public. And the loss of his friendship hurts a great deal. I gave my child all the time and money that I had, now I want it for me,\u201d during a 2009 interview with\u00a0<em>The Guardian.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\u201cThe only way I could be married to anyone ever again is if they lived in another country,\u201d Whoopi said. \u201cThey could come and visit, it would be like, \u2018Oh, my goodness, I haven\u2019t seen you in so long. Come here!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, Goldberg enjoys her life in the company of her cat, Oliver.<\/p>\n<p>She is accredited as a truly unique and visible talent in Hollywood.
