She grew up somewhat poor: as one of 12 children money was quite an issue.<\/p>\n<p>However, music became something her family gathered around. Her mother sang and played guitar, and when Parton performed in church at a young age, she started to learn more about music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic was such a large part of our whole family,\u201d Parton\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reverb.com\/news\/dolly-parton-tells-us-about-her-first-guitar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recalled<\/a>. \u201cAll of my mama\u2019s people were musical. They all played some sort of musical instrument. Of course, I took my music really seriously, and I was always plucking along on somebody\u2019s instrument \u2014 whatever they would leave lying around or whenever my family would come. Before long, she had started to write her own songs.<\/p>\n<p>By age 10, she had performed on several local television and radio stations in Knoxville, Tennessee, and at age 13, she made her debut on the national country radio station,\u00a0<em>Grand Ole Opry<\/em>. It was my treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-moved-to-nashville\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moved to Nashville<\/h2>\n<p>Parton went to high school and graduated, becoming the first one in her family to do so. But in 1964, at the age of 18, she decided to focus fully on her music career. Dolly Parton left home and headed to the Mecca of the country music scene, Nashville.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a dream,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I had a talent, I thought. And I really believed it was going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Nashville, Dolly quickly became a star. She worked with Porter Wagoner on\u00a0<em>The Porter Wagoner Show<\/em>, and the duo became very popular. Parton and Wagoner released several country hits together, and she soon got a contract with RCA Records. In 1971, Parton landed her first No. 1 country hit,\u00a0<em>Joshua<\/em>, and several more hits followed. One of them was, of course<em>,<\/em>\u00a0\u201cJolene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song\u00a0only has 200 words in it. However, it became one of the biggest hits of the 20th century. She starred alongside Jane Fonda in the 1980 hit comedy\u00a0<em>9 to 5<\/em>, for which she also contributed with the soundtrack. More film appearances followed, and in 1986, she even opened her own amusement park, Dollywood, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>Dolly claims to have written more than 3,000 songs in her career. Meanwhile, she\u2019s sold more than 100 million albums, topped the country chart 25 times, and won a staggering eight Grammy Awards. And she\u2019s showing no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost every day I come up with a few song titles or a sweet melody,\u201d Parton told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-37131104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">BBC<\/a>\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 16 in some ways. I\u2019m still a hopeless romantic. But I\u2019m 35 in my spirit and in my mind. When I was 35, it was a pinnacle, a great time in my life \u2013 success and happiness and all that. At the time, Dolly was 18 and Carl was 21. Straight away, Carl realized there was something very special about the young lady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first thought was, \u2018I\u2019m gonna marry that girl,\u2019\u201d Dean\u00a0said in a statement of the moment they met, as quoted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/news\/190615_dolly_parton_and_carl_dean_renew_wedding_vows_for_50th_wedding_anniversary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Entertainment Tonight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-f16500c92dac3a6daa515cc184b6c648\" class=\"newsner-f16500c92dac3a6daa515cc184b6c648 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy second thought was, \u2018Lord she\u2019s good lookin.\u2019\u2019\u2019 And that was the day my life began. I wouldn\u2019t trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean was sitting in his pickup truck as he saw Dolly and \u201chollered\u201d at her, as she recalled in an interview with the NY Times in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>However, she declined a date with him. Instead, she invited him over when she was babysitting her nephew just days after. It was the start of a love story that never ended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came up every day that week and we sat out on the porch. I wouldn\u2019t even take him in the house,\u201d she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ca.style.yahoo.com\/dolly-parton-husband-carl-dean-144745243.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-6a7cff213f506067e334da34a065568e\" class=\"newsner-6a7cff213f506067e334da34a065568e newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThen my aunt got a day off, and she could keep the kid and that was my first chance to go anywhere with Carl and he drove me straight to his folks\u2019 house and introduced me to his mother and daddy. \u2018Cause he said he knew right the minute he saw me that that\u2019s the one he wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-left-tennessee-to-get-married\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Left Tennessee to get married<\/h2>\n<p>In May 1966, Dolly Parton and Carl Dean married in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Her record label actually wanted them to wait to get married since she had a career to think about. (Photo by Ron Galella, Ltd.\/Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The only ones in attendance were Dolly, Carl, and her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother made me a little white dress and a little bouquet and a little Bible,\u201d Dolly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmt.com\/news\/1769694\/why-dolly-parton-got-married-in-georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recalled<\/a>. \u201cBut I said, \u2018I can\u2019t get married in a courthouse because I\u2019ll never feel married.\u2019 So we found a little Baptist church in town, and went up to Pastor Don Duvall and said, \u2018Would you marry us?\u2019 We got pictures on the steps right outside the church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ever since then, Dolly and Carl have been deeply in love. We had our own little ceremony in a little chapel on our property, then we went in our little RV down to Ringgold, Georgia, and spent the night where we had married 50 years before. We took some beautiful pictures and got all dressed up. It was fun really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve always been good buddies. We have a lot of fun and a lot of respect for one another. It was his first marriage and mine and we never thought we\u2019d ever want to do that again. Why bother?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-dolly-parton-children\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dolly Parton \u2013 children<\/h2>\n<p>Dolly Parton has been in show business all her life, so it\u2019s helped her to have the support of her one true love through it all. These days, they can pretty much do whatever they want, and we truly think they deserve it all.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s one thing that Carl and Dolly decided against: having children. Parton started the book-gifting program Imagination Library project, which mails free, high-quality books to children from birth up to age five, no matter their family\u2019s income.<\/p>\n<p>According to Parton, there have been up to 125 million kids involved in the program.
