I always thought I understood my boyfriend, that we were on the same page about what our relationship meant. But then, one evening, he dropped a bombshell I never saw coming. He casually brought up the idea of opening our relationship, something so foreign to me that I didn’t even know how to respond at first. But the shock didn’t stop there.

He went on to say that if we were to explore this, he’d like to bring his best friend into it. His best friend, a guy I’ve known for years, someone he’s always referred to as his “brother.” I was floored. How could he even suggest something like this? His best friend had always been around, but never in that way.

I felt a wave of disbelief, followed by confusion. Was this really the man I loved? Was this how he saw our relationship? My mind couldn’t wrap around it—why me, why us, why him? It felt like everything I thought I knew about us had suddenly been put on shaky ground.
