The Late Night Call: A Whisper of Suspicion

It was nearly midnight when my husband received a call. We were curled up on the couch, watching our favorite TV show, when his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, muttered something about a work emergency, and stepped out onto the balcony to answer it. I could hear the low hum of his voice through the glass door, serious but calm, speaking in a way that was familiar but guarded. After a few minutes, he returned, saying it was his secretary calling about an urgent project that couldn’t wait until morning.

I nodded, pretending to be understanding, but inside, my mind was racing. Why would she be calling so late? What kind of “emergency” couldn’t wait until office hours? He reassured me that everything was under control, but I couldn’t help feeling a little uneasy. The idea of them communicating after hours, discussing work when the rest of the world was asleep, left me feeling vulnerable.

As we settled back on the couch, I tried to focus on the show, but my thoughts kept drifting to the woman on the other end of the line—the one who got to see a side of my husband that I didn’t. Did they laugh together during the day? Did they share the occasional coffee break and talk about their personal lives?

I knew my husband loved me, and our relationship was solid, but I couldn’t ignore the reality that she played a significant role in his life. It was a reminder that relationships require trust, even when it’s hard, and that I had to trust him, even if my imagination sometimes made it difficult.
