Living in the Shadow of My Past

Spread the love

As a married woman, I never expected my past relationships to become such a fixation in my marriage. My husband constantly brings up my exes, comparing himself to them in ways I never even considered. At first, I thought it was harmless curiosity—something many partners might wonder about. But over time, his questions became more pointed, more persistent, as if he were searching for reassurance he couldn’t seem to find.

He wants to know everything. How serious were those relationships? Did they make me happier? Were they more attractive, more successful, more exciting? It feels like he’s competing with ghosts, battling a past that has no place in our present. I remind him that I chose him, that those relationships are long gone, but it never seems to be enough.

Sometimes, I catch him brooding after an innocent conversation turns into another interrogation. He’ll replay old stories I once shared, dissecting every detail as if searching for hidden truths. I see the insecurity in his eyes, the way he questions his worth even when I assure him he is the only one who matters.

It’s exhausting, feeling like I have to constantly prove my love and loyalty when I’ve never given him a reason to doubt me. I wonder if this is normal behavior or if it’s something deeper—an insecurity so deeply rooted that no amount of reassurance will ever be enough. And if that’s the case, how long before his jealousy starts to unravel what we’ve built?
