At first, it seemed like nothing more than a friendly gesture. My boss had invited me to his private pool, making it sound casual—just a way to unwind and talk outside the office. He had always been charming, confident, and persuasive, so I didn’t overthink it. After all, maintaining a good relationship with a superior was important for my career.
When I arrived, everything appeared normal. The pool area was elegant and secluded, the kind of luxury I had only seen in magazines. He greeted me with a warm smile, offering me a drink. We talked about work, future opportunities, and my potential in the company. It all felt professional—until it wasn’t.
As the evening progressed, his words took an unexpected turn. His tone became more personal, his gaze lingering longer than it should. Then, without hesitation, he made his proposition.
“If you spend the night with me, I’ll make sure you get that promotion,” he said smoothly, as if he were offering me a well-earned bonus.
I felt my breath catch. Had I heard him correctly? His expression was calm, expectant, as though this was a normal part of business. I searched his face for any sign of regret, of hesitation—but there was none. He was serious. He knew I was married, yet it didn’t seem to matter to him at all. My personal life, my dignity, my self-respect—none of it seemed relevant in his eyes.
Shock paralyzed me. My mind raced with emotions—disbelief, anger, disgust. I had worked hard to earn my place in the company, believing that my skills and dedication would take me forward. But in this moment, none of that seemed to matter. To him, my success could be bought, and the price was my integrity.
I wanted to lash out, to scream at him for his arrogance, but I knew I had to be careful. This was my boss—a man with power, a man who could make or break my career. If I rejected him outright, what would happen? Would I lose everything I had worked for? Would he retaliate?
Taking a deep breath, I steadied myself, knowing that whatever I said next could change everything. One thing was certain: I refused to let him reduce me to a transaction. But now, I had to figure out how to walk away from this situation without losing everything.
