Unexpected Company

Spread the love

It was a picture-perfect day, the kind of warm, sunny afternoon that begged to be enjoyed by the pool. With my husband away at work and the house to myself, I decided to take full advantage of the quiet, slipping into my favorite lounge chair with nothing but a pair of sunglasses and a good book. The sun was warm on my skin, and I felt a sense of relaxation wash over me that I hadn’t experienced in weeks.

I had completely forgotten that we had hired a new pool guy. Our usual one had moved out of town, and my husband had mentioned arranging for someone new to come by for maintenance. But in the peaceful haze of the afternoon, that detail slipped my mind entirely.

The backyard was our private oasis, surrounded by tall fences and lush greenery. Feeling completely at ease, I decided to sunbathe topless, letting the sun kiss every inch of my skin. It was liberating, a little indulgence that felt like a treat just for me. I closed my eyes, soaking in the warmth, the world around me fading into the background.

I was so lost in the moment that I didn’t hear the knock on the front door or the ring of the doorbell. My mind was miles away, drifting somewhere between the soft rustling of the leaves and the rhythmic sound of water gently lapping against the pool’s edge.

It wasn’t until I heard a faint rustling nearby that I opened my eyes, squinting against the bright sunlight. To my shock, I saw him—the new pool guy—standing at the edge of the patio, his eyes wide with surprise. He had apparently let himself in, assuming I wasn’t home since no one answered the door.

For a moment, time seemed to freeze. We both just stared at each other, his face a mix of embarrassment and apology, while I scrambled to cover myself with the towel that was draped over the chair. My heart was pounding in my chest, a mix of surprise and a strange thrill rushing through me.

“I’m so sorry, ma’am,” he stammered, quickly averting his gaze. “I didn’t mean to intrude. I knocked, but no one answered, so I thought it would be okay to come around back.”

His discomfort was palpable, and for a second, I almost felt sorry for him. But there was also a part of me that found the situation oddly exhilarating. Here was this stranger, someone who had probably seen hundreds of backyards and pools, suddenly caught off guard by this unexpected scene.

I pulled the towel around myself, sitting up a little straighter as I tried to regain some composure. “It’s okay,” I managed to say, though my voice was slightly shaky. “I just… wasn’t expecting anyone.”

He nodded, still looking anywhere but directly at me. “I’ll, uh, just get to work, then,” he said, already moving toward the pool equipment as if eager to focus on anything other than what had just happened.

I watched him for a moment, the awkwardness of the situation slowly giving way to a sense of curiosity. He was young, probably in his late twenties, with a strong, athletic build that suggested he spent a lot of time outdoors. There was something about the way he moved, a quiet confidence that contrasted sharply with the awkwardness of our encounter.

As he worked, I couldn’t help but steal a few glances in his direction. He was meticulous, checking the chemical levels, skimming the surface of the water, making sure everything was in perfect condition. Every now and then, I noticed his eyes flicker in my direction, as if he was trying to confirm that I was still there.

Part of me wanted to slip inside, to avoid any further embarrassment. But another part of me—the part that enjoyed the thrill of being seen, of breaking the monotony of my day—kept me rooted to the spot. I decided to stay by the pool, the towel still wrapped around me, but my presence a reminder that the moment we had shared wasn’t entirely forgotten.

Eventually, he finished his work, gathering his tools and preparing to leave. As he walked past me, he hesitated, his eyes meeting mine for just a brief moment. There was a flicker of something there—maybe an unspoken understanding, maybe just the lingering tension of what had happened earlier.

“Thanks for taking care of the pool,” I said, my voice more steady now.

He nodded, offering a small smile. “No problem, ma’am. I’ll be back next week for the regular maintenance.”

With that, he was gone, disappearing through the gate and leaving me alone by the pool once more. The sun was still warm, the day still perfect, but something had shifted. There was a new energy in the air, a sense that the ordinary afternoon had taken an unexpected turn.

As I lay back down on the lounge chair, I couldn’t help but smile to myself. The encounter had been awkward, yes, but it had also been a reminder that life still had its surprises, even in the most unexpected moments. I closed my eyes, letting the sun continue to warm my skin, and allowed myself to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, the memory of the pool guy’s visit lingering in the back of my mind.
