“A Debt Paid in Rome”

Spread the love

It all started innocently enough. My husband had been under some financial pressure lately, and his boss had been more than generous in lending him money. But the deadline for repayment was fast approaching, and my husband had no way to cover what he owed. One evening, after a tense conversation with his boss, I received a surprising call.

“Jessica,” his boss’s voice was smooth over the phone, “I think we can come to an arrangement that will take care of your husband’s debt. Why don’t you join me on my upcoming business trip to Rome? We’ll call the whole thing even.”

I knew what he was implying, and though my mind raced, the allure of solving our financial issues with one gesture was too tempting to resist. Rome—city of romance, history, and now…a proposition that had me curious, nervous, and intrigued all at once.

The flight to Rome felt surreal. I told myself that I was doing this for my husband, to take the weight off his shoulders. But part of me was also drawn to the adventure of it all—the idea of something forbidden, a secret that would stay between his boss and me.

The evening we arrived, we shared dinner in a quiet, candle-lit restaurant nestled near the Colosseum. The air between us was charged, each sip of wine loosening our words, our boundaries. He wasn’t bad to look at either—confident, successful, a bit older but still carrying himself with a commanding presence.

After dinner, we walked through the streets of Rome, the night air warm and fragrant. As we reached the hotel, I knew what was coming next. He leaned in, his breath grazing my neck as he whispered, “Let’s settle this debt.”

One night. That was all it took. We shared a passionate, unforgettable evening, and when it was over, he looked at me with a satisfied smile. “Debt paid,” he said simply, leaving me with a kiss on the cheek before slipping out of the room.

As I lay there, staring at the ceiling, I wasn’t sure how to feel. The debt was settled, but the memory of Rome would linger far longer than I had anticipated.
